He had a dream...

Martin Luther King’s day is an important event in the United States. It’s celebrated each year on the third Monday of January. Since 1971 cities and states established annual holidays to honor Martin Luther. The holiday became official in 1983, when President Ronald Reagan signed it into law.

Martin Luther King played an important role in American history. He was a well-known civil right activist. His career began in 1955, when he was a leader in Montgomery bus boycott. King was arrested during this campaign and then became a best-known spokesman of the civil rights movement. Then in 1957 King helped to found the SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference). SCLC was created to organize the power of black churches to conduct nonviolent protests. In 1962 Martin Luther led a struggle against segregation in Georgia, that was unlucky. During his participation in the civil rights movement, Martin Luther was criticized by many people. Such as Malcolm X, who disagreed with King's plea for racial integration because his intentions were nonviolent. He achieved enacting the rights such as: desegregation, voting, labor rights, into the law of the United States in 1964.

On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King was shot by James Earl Ray during his speech in the balcony. Two months later, the murderer was captured at London Heathrow Airport while trying to escape on a false Canadian passport. Ray was convicted to 99-year imprisonment.

After King’s death, his wife Coretta Scott King followed his steps and was civil right activist until she died in 2006.

We also celebrate Martin Luther King’s day in our library.

We shall discuss his life and results of his activity on January, 15. Welcome to join us!

When I close my eyes and think about Dr.King’s life, the main image that comes to me over and over again is that of stained-glass windows in a church. For me, the windows are metaphors in a lot of ways. In the dark, they blaze out at you like beams of light.

The history of African Americans is a story that is both triumphant and sad. Through the many sufferings of slavery and discrimination emerged individuals and eventually a group of people who have made a difference in the lives of others.

Africans who came to this country in shackles brought that know-how with them. They used it to help build this country into a powerful nation. But because of racial discrimination and prejudice, most were robbed of the credit and recognition for their contributions.

The stories that we have told here are not always encouraging. A number deals with episodes of strife, brutality, and confrontation during which the human suffering has been extreme. Nevertheless, such episodes are an integral part of American history and its underlying tale of a basically optimistic people fashioning from their uneven past a hopeful if uncertain future.
