Guy de Maupassant – master of a stories with an unexpected ending

2020 marks the 170th anniversary of birth of the famous French writer Henri-Rene-Albert-Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893).

Guy de Maupassant is a French writer whose works was closely related with naturalism. The man managed to earn a fortune in literature. Insatiable in love, he turned most women into characters in short stories and novels. He is also a keen traveler who has traveled around Europe and looked into uncharted corners of the world.

The writer's full name is Henri Rene Albert Guy de Maupassant. He was born in the estate of Miromesnil near the town of Dieppe in a family of impoverished nobles. His grandfather bankrupted, and father Gustave de Maupassant had no choice but to go to work. He was known as a dandy and a gambler.

He married his own opposite - a childhood friend, Laura Le Poitevin, was a serious and thoughtful person. However, the couple did not get along under the same roof.

Maupassant's childhood passed in carelessness and idleness. The boy was left to himself, so he spent a lot of time on the street. From an early age, he learned to fish, and made friends with farmers, sailors, and fishermen.

At the age of 13, freedom ended. Maupassant’s mother arranged for her son a place in Seminary. The freedom-loving teenager did not like the strictness of the educational institution: he ran away several times, constantly played pranks, and as a result, the troublesome seminarian was ignominiously expelled. The mother decided to try her luck at the lycee de Rouen, where she placed her son. Here the young man took root, showed bright abilities for science and art, and most importantly, found guides to the world of literature.

Maupassant went through the war as private soldier, and at this time he developed a passion for astronomy and natural science.

Working in the Ministry, Guy de Maupassant under Flaubert began to take the first steps in the field of writing. A few years straight, he wrote, destroyed the manuscripts, and again sat down at the feather. Flaubert insisted that the young man spend every day "on the Muse", in his opinion, the only way to achieve success.

The first publication in the creative biography of the novice writer happened in 1875. The novel "The Hand"was published in the newspaper under a pseudonym, as well as the poem “On the Shore", which four years later in a revised form made a lot of noise and brought the author to court. The work, which received a new name - "Girl" representatives of Supervisory authorities considered as pornography. Flaubert came to the rescue again, writing an exculpatory letter. In 1880, the light saw the story "Dampling", which was included in the collection. The story succeeded in the circles of critics and readers with its subtle irony and brightness of characters. At work, he was even given a six-month of sabbatical. Literary critics distinguish "Pierre and Jean", "On the Water", "Under the Sun", novellas and " Necklace"," Moonlight"," Testament" and of course, the novel"Bel Ami". Guy de Maupassant rose to the top of the galaxy of stars of French short stories.

Guy was plagued by headaches, and later nervous attacks. In 1891, a man attempted suicide by cutting his throat. He went to a psychiatric hospital and died two years later. The cause of death was paralysis of the brain.
